Rise presents a series of ideas in fragmented forms which eventually meld together in various combinations throughout the piece. Ideas overlap and intermingle, blurring the lines between them. Underlying a majority of the piece is a driving ostinato which outlines the irregular meter, rising in pitch over the course of the work. A haunting call in the trumpet is later answered by the lowest instruments before being restated in a new form by half the orchestra at its climax. This motive is the source for much of the work’s material and is present in several forms throughout it, culminating in a final restatement by the strings and tuba in the closing orchestral crescendo.
